Tornio: Port of Northern Possibilities
Tornio is a city on the western border of Finland. Together with Haparanda in Sweden, Tornio forms half of the twin city Tornio-Haparanda.
The city’s location, its role as a logistics and service hub, and the city’s size make Tornio a unique combination of locales for TV and film productions. The region has downtown residential vistas, quiet suburbs, city parks, industrial and logistics locations, bodies of water of various sizes, and surrounding it all is the quiet beautiful nature of Lapland – truly a port of northern possibilities.
Sites and sceneries
Tornio is a geographically ideal location for TV or movie productions. The city itself allows for urban and suburban settings, and its location by the Bothnian Bay is a terrific opportunity to harness the open sea and archipelago for establishing shots.
Venturing just outside of the city limits opens up Lapland. Closer to Tornio are smaller towns and agricultural areas, but by continuing further north-northeast you can find the magic of Lapland and untouched nature.
Nightless Nights, Dark Days
Tornio is close enough to the Arctic Circle that essentially, around midsummer, the region basks in the nightless night sun, allowing for shooting in natural light for long days during summer.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, in midwinter the region is essentially blanketed in darkness, as on shortest days, the sun only rises above the horizon for three hours, which means night time shoots can be accomplished relatively early.
Logistical Sweetspot
Tornio is within a two-hour drive from Finland’s second largest airport in Oulu. Also close by are the Finnish airports, Kemi-Tornio and Rovaniemi, and the airport in Luleå, Sweden.
Tornio is a compact urban area on the waterfront with good access to several logistics services. Different types of locations and sceneries are always a short drive or boat ride away. 10 minutes is all you need to get around by car within the Tornio¬-Haparanda city limits. Accessing the Tornio-Haparanda archipelago can be arranged with a fleet of various types of watercrafts.
As a major residential area, Tornio-Haparanda has extensive services available for your production. You can purchase all the things needed for day-to-day operations of your production.
