Tornio valley summer whitefish

Tornio Valley Summer Whitefish (2016-2018) is a joint development effort of nearly 60 different stakeholders worried about the loss of traditional fishing culture and whitefish in Tornio Valley. The main objective of the project is to strengthen the attractiveness of the unique traditional fishing culture in the Arctic, more precisely in Tornio Valley.

The aim is to increase the knowledge of fish and cultural heritage among fishermen, inhabitants, entrepreneurs, and in particular among young people. Important part of the action is to enhance the better conditions for fishing culture in the Arctic and the Tornio River whitefish population and its sustainable management.

During the implementation, there is a lot of action along Tornio River, from Tornio and Haparanda up to Ylitornio and Övertorneå. The mobile whitefish exhibition can be invited to different events. A bigger Whitefish event is organized yearly, bringing together stakeholders from Sweden and Finland. Productions (videos and stories) of tradition and nature will be available on project website, and later on, even on other regional websites. Around 10 elementary schools have selected classes of 10-years old children to learn about tradition and nature. There are also some possibilities to see marking and follow-up of fish during the years.
