In Lapland, the turnover of the industrial sector in 2019 totalled EUR 9.5 billion and the sector employed 17,600 people. The total turnover was 2 percent lower than the previous year.
Growth was recorded in forestry and timber harvesting, in addition to, e.g. the energy sector and logistics operations related to industrial activity. In mining and manufacturing, on the other hand, net sales decreased slightly compared to the previous year.
The value of Lapland’s exports was EUR 3.8 billion, most of which came specifically from industry. Lapland generates 6% of Finland’s goods exports, which is a lot in proportion to, for example, the fact that only 3% of the population lives in Lapland.
