The growth of the Arctic Region is seen as an opportunity to change Finland’s logistical position from a remote border country to an international transit country.
Passing through the Finnish Lapland, the Arctic Railway would unite Europe and The Arctic Ocean with Northeastern Passage. Therefore, if built, the Arctic Railway would employ local people and provide new industry opportunities. But the decision to start construction is still far away because there are multiple details to solve. For example, the Sámi people have criticized the way the Arctic Railway is promoted. Also, the long term of the project complicates the assessment of the importance of the investment.
